Social Media Trend Sees THE PEOPLE Come Together To Drive Change
Hollywood is in a state of flux. Work has dwindled, and the industry is quivering in the face of the AI revolution. One would expect this to make celebrities and brands more attuned to global affairs, but many are desperately clinging to the past. This stark contrast, glaringly illuminated by corporate greed and the Met Gala theatrics, is sparking a revolution on social media platforms like X and TikTok.
In recent years, the American middle class has been decimated by corporate greed, selfish PACs, paid-off politicians, and systems that no longer serve to raise people. The American dream is now a pipe dream for younger generations, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of aware Americans.
Most people have been crushed by rent and grocery prices that are gouging people by as much as 30-50%. The lack of jobs and opportunities has put fear into younger generations and their parents. The phrase inflation cannot hide the truth of how corrupt the system has become. Americans' anger is pouring out in many ways, as seen on college campuses. I believe the war is acting as a catalyst for much of that anger about... well, everything. THE PEOPLE are mad and ready for a brawl.
Enter the Met Gala 2024. I sat on my bed watching the red carpet, thinking this would NOT go over well. I have warned celebrities on my podcast for two years that they must be careful. Given the frustration brewing in America, the timing, excess, and behavior of many stars were just not wise moves.
As someone who has dressed people for the gala, worked with Vogue at big events, and loves the museum, I don't have an issue with glam fundraisers. Much of my career highs have been thanks to celebrity collaborations. This was simply a year for a low-key red carpet. That is not what happened. The disconnect seen at the Met Gala was bad form and worse timing. I immediately thought of the Hunger Games. So did many others, as evidenced by the millions of views comparison videos have received.
Within 24 hours, a movement that gave me hope for future generations began to rise on social media. Millions of people of all ages started to support a campaign to block celebrities. Let's be honest. Celebrity worship has gotten out of control. The power being given to a handful of people, many of them nepo-babies, was disproportionate to any benefit that they offered to the American people. They are just people with the means to get more attention. Celebrity worship had grown out of control and needed a reset.
The pendulum needs to swing in the other direction. That requires THE PEOPLE to rise up and demand change. We are finally seeing that take place via social media apps like X (Twitter). For instance, an orchestrated movement on social media cost Planet Fitness and Kelloggs a significant sum in a matter of days. The people are awakening to the power they possess and I am here for it!
Celebrities and corporate America should take note. People finally understand that we really do get the democracy or, in this case, the society we "vote" for or allow.
We, THE PEOPLE, possess the power to rectify the challenges we face. It is our attention and financial support that influential brands crave. Let's amplify this trend to confront the issues most of our politicians prefer to ignore. Perhaps this is why they were so eager to control X and ban TikTok. It has always been about controlling THE PEOPLE.
