I believe we are in the midst of an evolutionary shift from Homo sapiens to Homo luminous, a view articulated by medical anthropologist Alberto Villoldo and long held in the prophecies of the Q’ero people of the Andes, the living descendants of the Inka.

This is not science fiction. It is the state that Jesus, the Buddha, the mystics, the Q’ero and other Andean keepers of wisdom, and countless anonymous teachers across cultures were pointing us toward. They were not just offering personal enlightenment for a few. They were describing the next available expression of what it means to be human. An expression that becomes essential precisely when technology begins to outpace the old version of us.

What does a luminous human look like?

A luminous human has developed the capacities that no machine can replicate:

The ability to feel deeply without being hijacked by emotion
Clear perception that can distinguish signal from noise, truth from performance
Emotional intelligence that includes self-regulation, empathy, and healthy boundaries
A higher level of human consciousness, such as joy aiming towards enlightenment
The ability to manage their energy body and mind, body, and soul harmony through spiritual practices like yoga and meditation.
A stable inner authority that does not collapse under external pressure or algorithmic influence
The capacity to hold paradox, grief, and wonder at the same time
A living relationship with meaning, purpose, and the larger field of life
I personally believe that homo luminous skills also include: a deep connection to the creator, aura reading, energy healing, intuitive gifts, access to the collective, and the ability to communicate without words.

These are not soft skills. In the age of AI they are survival skills, and more than that, they are the skills of a beautiful future.

When enough people develop these capacities, the collective nervous system of humanity stabilizes. We become less reactive, less easily manipulated, more creative, and more capable of steering technology toward life rather than being steered by it.

Why the timing matters

The ancient prophecies and the modern data are converging. We are being asked to grow up, quickly. The mental health crisis we already see is expected to intensify as AI rearranges work, relationships, identity, and the very texture of daily life. People who have not cultivated inner technology will struggle. People who have will not only survive, they will help midwife a more coherent, compassionate, and creative chapter for our species.

Before we get going on this week’s newsletter, I wanted to wholeheartedly say thank you to everyone who reached out to me regarding my last newsletter on learning to cry again. It means SO much to me that many of you saw yourselves in my journey and that you truly felt seen, understood, and/or inspired. I also appreciate all the birthday wishes! Can’t believe I am 30, again ;-) !

Alright, time to share something that makes me squirm.

Today I recorded myself singing in the bathroom and I am going to share it with you. No filter, no autotune, no good speaker to hide behind, just my voice, a tinny little laptop speaker, and the acoustic mercy of tile. Just thinking about hitting “share” on that makes me want to curl up and die. I am not someone who likes being watched, especially while I am still learning something. I am a person who built a career on being polished. Books published. Stages held. Words chosen carefully. Letting you see me be bad at something, in progress, unedited, goes against every instinct I have.

Here is why I am doing it anyway.

Just to make myself really uncomfortable, I recorded this one time in the bathroom with no warmup. It would hardly serve the point to have recorded it over and over.

I am deep in the writing of one of our new SoulTech Foundation courses, 9 Steps to Living Joyfully, which is built on the framework I first wrote about in my book Unleash the Empress. That book documented the steps I took years ago to glow up and genuinely learn to enjoy life again, and one of those steps was discovering, and rediscovering, my gifts. Back then I went through the full list of things I had ever been curious about or halfway good at. I revisited things I had tried long ago. I added brand new things to the list, too.

Writing the course version of that step this week put all of it right back in front of me, and it reminded me that discovering your gifts is not a one time task you check off during a glow up and move past. It is ongoing. So I decided to keep proving that to myself in real time, in front of you.

Painting is the oldest hobby I chose on my glow up journey. I painted in high school, let it go for decades, and picked it back up a few years ago, before Unleash the Empress even came out. Singing came later. I have been practicing in the gym for about a year and a half now, and I am still very much in the learning trenches. And this year I bought a vintage Ovation guitar, the next item on my own list, which I am only just beginning to actually learn.

That is the part nobody tells you when they talk about “finding your gifts.” They show you the after. The gallery show, the album, the highlight reel. Nobody shows you the middle, the part where your painting looks like it was made by a caffeinated toddler and your guitar chords sound like they are dying. That middle is uncomfortable. Practice can be messy. And I have come to believe it is one of the most important places a grown adult can put themselves.

Why new goals and hobbies matter more than we think

We tend to treat hobbies as decoration, something nice we do once the real work of life is finished. I want to reframe that for you, because the research and the wisdom traditions actually agree on this one.

Your brain is not a fixed object. Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new neural pathways throughout your entire life, does not shut off at some arbitrary age.

It responds to novelty and challenge. When you ask your hands to do something they have never done, hold a paintbrush at a new angle, find a chord shape your fingers have never made, your brain builds new connections to meet the demand. Familiar, well worn activities do not ask this of you. New ones do.

There is also a longevity piece here that I think about often, especially working alongside communities who are navigating what it means to build a meaningful life in the age of AI. Studies on aging populations consistently point to cognitive engagement, social connection, and a sense of purpose as protective factors, not just for the mind but for the body. Learning is not just a metaphor for staying young. It appears to be one of the actual mechanisms.

And then there is the piece that matters most to me spiritually, which is evolution. Not the Darwinian kind, the soul kind. Every time you let yourself be a beginner, you practice a very specific kind of humility and courage at the same time. You prove to yourself that your identity is not fixed at whatever you already mastered years ago. You remember that you are still becoming. That is not a small thing. That might be the whole point.

What the awkward phase is actually doing for you

The clumsy, cringe, not-good-yet phase is not a detour on the way to the gift. It is the gift doing its early work. Every wrong note and lopsided brushstroke is your brain and your nervous system recalibrating. You cannot skip this part, and honestly, I would gently suggest you should not want to. The awkward phase is where your ego gets a little smaller and your capacity gets a little bigger. Both of those are good for you.

How to actually do this, step by step

If this is stirring something in you, here is how I would suggest starting.

First, pick something you have always been curious about, not something you think you should be good at. Curiosity survives the awkward phase. Should does not.

Second, lower the bar on purpose. Give yourself permission to be genuinely bad for a defined stretch of time, say 90 - 180 days, with zero expectation of impressing anyone, including yourself.

Third, make it small and repeatable. Fifteen minutes of guitar most days will change your brain faster than one heroic two hour session you only do once.

Fourth, let someone see you before you are ready, even if every part of you resists it. This is the hardest one and the most important one, and I say that as someone who genuinely does not enjoy this step. Share the recording. Show the ugly painting. Being witnessed in the unfinished middle is part of what makes the growth real instead of theoretical, and it does not get more comfortable just because you already know that.

Fifth, track how you feel, not how you sound or look. Are you more present. Are you sleeping better. Are you a little less rigid about who you think you are. That is the metric that matters.

I am still terrible at guitar, for the record. My painting has graduated from “cringe” to “acceptable,” which honestly feels like a Grammy win. My singing is finding its footing, and today, on a bathroom recording with a crappy speaker and zero polish, you get to hear exactly where it is.

I want to be clear that I am not doing this because I love being watched mid-learning. I do not. I am doing it because I think we have all gotten a little too comfortable hiding behind our competence, myself included, and someone has to go first.

Learning to Cry Again: How a Virus, Flooding, & a 9/11 Photo Helped Me Truly Feel Again

I need to tell you about the week I finally learned how to cry again.

It started small, the way these things always do. My car’s air conditioning began acting up after “repairs”, which if you know Florida in July, you know is basically a personal attack from the universe. Then I caught whatever salad-adjacent virus is currently making its rounds and became violently ill. Then, in the middle of all that, I came across an old photo of myself while digging through my archives. I was wearing the exact outfit I had on the morning of September 11, 2001. The photo was taken right before.

And then, as if the universe wanted to make absolutely sure I couldn’t outrun any of it, my first floor toilet flooded. Not a little. Inches of water across the entire first floor. I was throwing up and cleaning sewage water at the same time. The next morning, it happened again. (A word to the wise, beautiful souls: be very, very careful with wipes.)

By the time that toilet flooded the first time, something in me that had been holding the line for twenty-five years simply gave out.

What Actually Happened on 9/11

I don’t share this part often, but it matters here. I was a publicist for the World Trade Center at the time of 9/11, and I was supposed to be in the restaurant for a meeting at the exact moment the tragedy began. In the days leading up, my spirit guides repeatedly pushed me to cancel that meeting. Which I did.

That fateful morning, before the second plane ever hit, I was shown visions of both towers coming down. I tried to call people. I tried to get help. I ran through the streets crying, begging anyone to listen to me. My coworkers, who understood the WTC was one of the big clients I had landed that year, thought I was losing my mind.

What I had seen came true.

I have never fully known what to do with that morning. The knowing, the running, the pleading with people who looked at me like I’d cracked. After I was done helping injured people, I walked nearly 100 blocks back to my apartment in that ghost town and cried for days. I remember taking that beautiful suit (I had bought it to celebrate my glam PR job) to the trash. It was destroyed and no longer wearable.

After that day, something in me closed. I had counted on one hand how many times I’d cried by the time I turned thirty. I was heavily masked long before I had language for what that meant. But after 9/11, I lost access to almost everything except anger. I could be terrifying when provoked. Underneath that anger was an ocean I had sealed off, because I had learned, in the worst way possible, that feeling too much and being believed too little could break a person.

So I didn’t feel. I performed. I powered through. For over two decades, chaos was where I was most comfortable, because chaos didn’t ask me to feel anything. It just asked me to handle it. And I always could.

Until the toilet flooded and I couldn’t.

The Breakdown That Was Actually a Breakthrough

I want to be honest with you about what that moment looked like, because I think too many of us have been taught to sanitize our breakdowns before we’re allowed to talk about them.

It was not graceful. I was sick, surrounded by water that should not have been in my house, and I ugly cried. From the heart. In the most real way I have cried in twenty-five years. Not performative tears, not the polite kind you dab at the corner of your eye. The kind that comes up from somewhere old and finally finds a door.

I was left spinning for hours after that. Sick, disoriented, cracked open. And once I could hold liquids down again, something shifted. I started to feel. Grief, fear, tenderness, things I hadn’t had real access to since I was a young woman running through downtown Manhattan trying to get someone, anyone, to believe what I already knew.

I think what happened to me is far more common than we admit. So many of us are walking around heavily masked, mistaking our numbness for strength, mistaking our ability to power through anything for healing, when really it’s just very sophisticated avoidance. We wear our competence like armor. And most people will never know the ocean sealed up underneath it, because we’ve gotten so good at performing that we’ve almost convinced ourselves too.

Learning to Cry Without Shame

If any part of my story is landing in your body right now, here is what I’m learning, and what I want to offer you.

Stop treating tears as a malfunction. Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that crying meant weakness, or worse, that it meant losing control in front of people who couldn’t be trusted with our real selves. Your tears are not a system failure. They are your nervous system finally trusting the room enough to let go.

You do not need a socially acceptable reason. You do not need your life to be falling apart in a way others can see and approve of. Sometimes the trigger is a photograph. Sometimes it’s a flooded bathroom floor. The size of the trigger has nothing to do with the size of what’s finally being released.

Let your body lead. I was sick before I cried. That is not a coincidence. Sometimes the body has to get loud enough, uncomfortable enough, that the mind finally stops managing everything and steps aside. If you’ve been trying to think your way into feeling, try letting your body get there first.

Release the guilt about the years you didn’t feel. I spent a long time being almost angry at myself for how numb I’d been, as if I had chosen it. I didn’t choose it. It chose me, on a morning when I ran through the streets telling the truth and no one believed me. Numbness was not my failure. It was my survival. And now, feeling again is not a betrayal of the woman who survived. It’s her reward.

Do not cry alone if you don’t have to. This one matters more than almost anything else I’m going to say.

The Women Who Held Me

While I was spinning, sick and cracked open in my own home, something beautiful happened. A dozen women from our Her Health Summit community began messaging me. Not all at once and then gone, but in rotation, day after day, taking turns showing up with love and care. Checking in. Sitting with me in it, even from a distance. Reminding me I did not have to hold this alone.

I have built a career and now a Foundation around the idea that we heal in community, but I will tell you, beautiful souls, there is nothing like living proof of your own philosophy showing up in your inbox at 2am when you need it most.

We talk a great deal in this culture about individual healing. Therapy, journaling, breathwork, all of it beautiful and all of it necessary. But there is a piece we do not talk about enough, which is that healing was never meant to be a solo sport. We were never meant to sit alone in our flooded bathrooms, sick and cracking open, with no one to witness it. We heal in relationship. We heal in circles. We heal when other women say, without being asked twice, I see you, I’m here, take your time.

That is the real medicine. Not the toilet, obviously. The witnessing.
